It’s January 6, 2026, which means if you made New Year’s resolutions, you’re officially on Day 6 of “New year, new me.”
How’s it going?
Hopefully your commitment to positive change is still intact! But if you’re already feeling a little shaky, you’re not alone. Quitter’s Day—typically the second Friday in January—falls on January 9th this year, and statistically, that’s when many resolutions quietly fall apart.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to improve your health, mindset, or habits.
But I’ll be honest—I’ve never been one for New Year’s resolutions.
Instead, I’ve always found it far more effective (and sustainable) to live by a few core principles that support physical, emotional, and mental health all year long. That way, you’re not under pressure to completely reinvent yourself every January 1st.
Here are the five principles I strive to practice 365 days a year.
1. Focus on What You Can Control
For some “control-freak” personalities, this one can be challenging!
But the truth is simple: you can only control what you can control. Accepting that—and letting go of everything else—can be incredibly freeing.
When you stop wasting energy on things outside your control, you’ll be amazed at how much peace of mind you gain.
2. Put Kindness Into the World Every Day
Kindness doesn’t have to be grand or dramatic.
It can be as simple as chatting kindly with a grocery store cashier or letting someone merge in front of you on the highway.
Being kind is never a mistake. Even if the person on the receiving end doesn’t acknowledge it, your actions still reflect who you are.
And who knows? That small moment of kindness might be exactly what someone needed in that moment.
3. Forgive Others (For Your Sake)
Years ago, when I taught Confirmation classes to high school students, one of the most important lessons I shared was this:
Forgiveness does not mean what someone did to you was okay.
Forgiveness means releasing the anger, resentment, and emotional burden you’ve been carrying. It’s not about the offender—it’s about your own healing and peace of mind.
I’ll share a personal example.
Many readers know that my father died of a massive heart attack at age 58, when I was just 15. What I don’t often share is that my dad was also an alcoholic.
As a child, that translated into a lot of anger and resentment. We couldn’t have friends over, family activities were rare, and arguments often erupted when he drank.
What I didn’t understand then—but came to realize later as an adult working in the health field—was that my father was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
He was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy during World War II and witnessed unimaginable trauma when his ship was hit in the South Pacific. Like many veterans of that era, he turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism.
When I finally came to that realization in my early 30s and chose to forgive him, the sense of relief was overwhelming. Forgiveness truly is a gift you give yourself.
4. Think for Yourself and Question Everything
Just because someone is in a perceived position of authority doesn’t automatically mean they’re right.
When in doubt, do your own research—and follow the money.
Take mainstream media, for example. An estimated 70–90% of their advertising revenue comes from pharmaceutical companies, making truly objective reporting nearly impossible.
Instead, seek out independent, alternative sources of information. You may be surprised by what you discover.
And don’t be afraid to ask questions of your doctor, either. A recommendation isn’t one-size-fits-all. Ask about alternatives, get second opinions, and make informed decisions that feel right for you.
5. Take Care of Your Body—It’s the Only One You’ve Got
