Omega-3 Benefits: Heart, Brain, Inflammation, and More

I get my inspiration for the articles I write in a variety of ways.

Talking with folks about their health concerns, reading literature and studies from experts I trust, scanning (garbage) literature from sources I don’t trust (so I’m aware of all the bad information that’s out there), and even observing people in the airport or grocery store!

All of these may trigger an idea for a blog.

But today’s inspiration comes from yours truly.

Because my martial arts class last night was especially challenging—I sparred for nearly an hour straight. It was an intense workout, but instead of waking up with soreness and pain this morning, I feel great.

So I was inspired to talk about the nutrient that is primarily responsible for how good I feel today… and one that offers a seemingly endless variety of other health benefits too.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Here’s what you need to know about these little powerhouse fats—and how omega-3s can improve your health in ways you may have never imagined.

Plant vs. animal sources of omega-3s

The first issue to tackle is the fact that there are both plant and animal sources of omega-3 fats.

While both offer benefits, only animal sources (i.e., fish oil) contain the superstar omega-3s: Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA).

So it’s the powerful benefits of omega-3 fats in fish oil that I’ll focus on below.

Protection against our top two killers

When a nutrient can help lower your risk of death from our top two killers, it’s wise to take note. Here’s how omega-3 fish oil supports your health:

Our #1 killer—heart disease

Studies have shown that getting adequate omega-3 EFAs can lower your risk of a fatal heart attack by as much as 10 percent.

Their natural anti-inflammatory action helps counteract plaque buildup in your arteries and supports smooth, healthy blood flow.

In addition, when taken after a heart attack, these fats can significantly improve survival rates and help your heart heal.

Omega-3 fish oil has also been shown to help lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides—supporting a healthier cardiovascular system without relying solely on medications.

Our #2 killer—cancer

Research suggests that omega-3 fish oil may help prevent and even slow the growth of certain cancers, including colon, prostate, and breast cancers.

It may also enhance the effectiveness of conventional cancer treatments and can play a supportive role in natural wellness approaches.

Beyond heart disease and cancer

The benefits of omega-3 fish oil go far beyond protecting you from our top two killers. Here are just a few:

Brain and mental health
60 percent of your brain is made of fat—and 90 percent of that fat is DHA.

It’s no surprise that omega-3 deficiencies have been linked to ADHD, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, and depression.

Weight management
Studies show that combining fish oil with regular exercise can help reduce body fat while improving metabolic and heart health.

Beautiful skin
Omega-3s nourish your skin, helping maintain smooth, elastic texture. They may also reduce wrinkles and support a more youthful appearance.

They’ve also been shown to help with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Eye health
Omega-3s can help reduce the risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetes-related eye issues.

Fertility
Research indicates omega-3 fatty acids can support fertility in both men and women.

Asthma support
Omega-3s may help reduce asthma symptoms in both children and adults.

Pregnancy and development
The brain develops most rapidly in the womb, and the fetus relies entirely on the mother for EPA and DHA during this critical time.

Inflammation support
EPA and DHA are incredibly effective at reducing inflammation in the body—including muscles and joints.

They’re the reason I feel great today after such a demanding workout.

In fact, studies show omega-3 fish oil can be just as effective as NSAIDs for reducing arthritis pain—without the risks.

Liver health
Fish oil may help improve liver function and reduce inflammation, especially in those with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Get what your body needs

Here are two of the best ways to ensure you’re getting enough omega-3 EFAs:

1) Through your diet

Incorporate natural sources of omega-3s, especially fatty fish like salmon.

Be sure to choose wild-caught salmon—never farmed (which can contain harmful contaminants).

At the same time, limit inflammatory foods like seed oils, vegetable oils, margarine, refined carbs, processed foods, and soda. These fuel inflammation and make your body more vulnerable to disease.

2) The essential role of supplementation

Unfortunately, most people don’t eat enough fish regularly to meet their omega-3 needs—making supplementation essential.

Our VitalMega-3 fish oil formula is designed to fill that gap.

Each daily two-capsule serving provides:

  • 1,200 mg of omega-3s
  • 600 mg EPA
  • 400 mg DHA (in the ideal 3:2 ratio)
  • Vitamin E for added antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support

Take advantage of nature’s powerful anti-inflammatory—omega-3 essential fatty acids—and support your health for years to come.

To your health,
Sherry Brescia
