Each atom contains a nucleus surrounded by electrons. Under normal circumstances, atoms like to have the correct number of electrons because that keeps them stable.

Sometimes, however, an atom loses an electron.

When that happens, it becomes a free radical.

Free radicals are unstable and immediately begin searching for another electron. To find one, they steal electrons from nearby molecules. Unfortunately, this damages the molecule they steal from.

Even worse, the damaged molecule can then become a free radical itself, creating a chain reaction that spreads from cell to cell.
